As healthcare providers, acupuncture practitioners should always be vigilant for signs of addictions exhibited by their clients. While most people immediately think of alcohol and drug abuse when they hear the word, behaviors can often be classified as addictions. In fact, most experts agree that addictions are really the behaviors exhibited by the substance-abusing individual. This differs from dependency, which is the physical component of substance abuse; this is the phenomenon from which individuals exhibit withdrawal symptoms.
Generally there are four distinct behaviors associated with addictions:
• loss of control
It is learning how to overcome these behaviors that is the real work in recovery, whether it is from drug and alcohol abuse, compulsive eating, pessimistic thinking or being addicted to misery. To understand how these behaviors show up in each person’s life, we must take the time to be still and truly look inwards.

Course ACHB 231-001
Course ACHB 231-002 • National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist Training: This two day seminar is the initial didactic course for those practitioners who wish to become NADA certified. (NCCAOM approved for 13 PDS points)
Course ACHB 231-003 • Advanced Acupuncture Treatment for Addictions: This one day course covers topics specific to the acupuncturist who either wants to specialize in treating this population or to supervise non-acupuncturists who provide this treatment (in states that permit this). and completes the didactic hours for NADA certification. (NCCAOM approved for 61/2 PDA points)
Dave Wurzel is a NADA Registered Trainer and was one of the recipients of the Association’s first ever Most Valuable Trainer Award in 2005. He travels extensively teaching the Acudetox protocol to acupuncturists, counselors, nurses and doctors. Dave has administered over 30,000 Acudetox treatments and is trained as a chemical dependency counselor.
